Waterloo Country Inn
Princess Anne, Maryland

Picture a beautiful country manor mansion sitting beside a tidal pond on Maryland's Eastern Seaboard and you have the perfect retreat or wedding spot waiting for you. I found all this and more at my last stop on this tour.

I knew by looking at the website, that there would be a lot of opportunities to get pictures of wild animals if I arrived early, so I did. The flowers were everywhere and with the mixture of Canadian geese, it was picture perfect. I took over 200 photos before I ever knocked on the door.

Therese greeted me and took me on the grand tour. She was so pleasant and I learned she spoke no less than 4 languages; English, German, Dutch and French. The home is furnished with beautiful antiques and Victorian reproductions. The home was spotless and the hardwood floors gleamed. The staircase, which is highlighted will all different spindles, is over 250 years old.

My second floor room, the Monie, had a four-poster canponied king-size bed with stepups. It had a hand woven comforter on it. One night stand had a phone. On the other was an alarm clock. Both had lamps. A desk, with water glasses, and an antique chair was beside the gas fireplace. There was a 27-inch TV with remote on a 6-drawer dresser. The room had 2 high back wing chairs with a table between them. On the table were magazines and a lamp. On the floor at the foot of the bed was a large rug.

In the closet were 2 soft terry cloth robes, blankets and pillows. The private en suite bathroom had extra towels and a tile floor. There was a tub/shower combination. The room highlighted in pastel colors and the mirror was surrounded by lights.

I met Erwin, Therese's husband, and then headed outside to take more pictures of the animals on the grounds. There was a pool, canoes and bikes waiting for use. I chose to keep taking pictures. You can see why Canadian geese stop when you look at the birds eye view below.

It is really beautiful here. Therese had a beverage and treats waiting for me upon my return inside the inn. As I enjoyed them, a young man came in and talked to Therese about having his wedding at the inn.

I headed upstairs to work on the photos for an hour and then went back to town (3.5 miles) for dinner. When I returned, there was an apple, banana and kiwi waiting for me. I enjoyed them and headed off for a great night's sleep.

In the morning, Therese met me at the base of the stairs and ushered me into the formal dining room. Some guests were already there. All of them had stayed at the inn before. One was back for the third time "this year"! One couple had been here 5 previous times and one gentleman from Germany was on his 8th visit since 1996. There can be no higher compliment paid than a returning guest.

The buffet style breakfast started with cheeses, cereals, fruits, tea, coffee and orange juice. Next Therese asked how we liked our eggs and served them with bacon and toast with fresh jams and butter.

After breakfast, one of the couples was going to put their canoe in the pond and work their way out into the Chesapeake Bay. I wish I was going along to take pictures, but you know me and boats.......!

Folks, for a country retreat, wedding or even your first B&B experience, I recommend Waterloo Country Inn. It's a winner! Contact Therese and Erwin and tell them we said HI! when you book your stay.
