St. Francis Inn
St. Augustine, Florida

We attended the Focus On Florida Conference (Inn Route) at The Radison Hotel in St. Augustine, Florida and got in late to the St. Francis Inn. On Sundays, instead of their normal social hour, the Inn has performers who visit and put on a show in their courtyard. We only caught the tail end of Dan Evans' efforts. It was nice how everyone welcomed him from England, while thanking him for coming to America. I'll never forget Dan and his lovely wife.

After our hostess, Mary, checked us in, our tour guide Tom explained, "The St. Francis is the oldest continually run Inn in St. Augustine. And to kind of emphasize how long that is, we have our own parking lot, a rarity in historic downtown St. Augustine." He said that the house was made out of coquina, a mortar made of sea shells, and the walls were very thick. Also the inn had been constructed without the use of right angles as it was built at a cross street that was not quite at a right angle.

We were taken to the Ballerina Room, complete with Symphony Electric Flame Fireplace. It had a queen bed, TV , 5 drawer dresser, desk, central air and an alarm clock. The bathroom was complete with a large garden style tub with Jacuzzi, and it felt great to lay back in it and relax...

I went down to the courtyard and sat feeling the wind on my face and listening to the wind chimes and a waterfall in the courtyard. I couldn't help noticing all the different types of trees and plants. Palm, banana, ferns, azelas, monkey grass, banyan trees, spider and numerous flowering plants made this water garden so beautiful.

The next morning Cindy and I sat on the balcony swing. It was so nice to be able to relax before breakfast and another day of the conference.

Breakfast consisted of breads, coffee cake, cereals, strawberry soup (something new for us -- it was great!), seafood quiche, yellow grits, coffee, tea, juices, variety of jams and wheat toast. Afterwards, I was ready to face 'em all!

Make sure on your next trip to St. Augustine to look up the St. Francis Inn.
