Kings Inn at Georgetown Bed & Breakfast
Georgetown, South Carolina

The long drive up from St. Augustine to the Kings Inn got us in right after dark and Jerry Burkhardt opened his door to admit us to the splendor of his home. My first thought was that it was quite appropriately named. The entry foyer was beautiful!

As the smell of fresh cut magnolias hung heavy in the air, Jerry took us on the grand tour. Each of the rooms has a theme and it was apparent that much care had been put into furnishings and decor for each room. The paintings are by local artists and are for sale at the inn. Most were done by Bruce Chandler. "She has been doing work for the inn for years," said Jerry.

After the tour, he showed us to the Blue Room, which was a very large room with a king bed (once again, we were convinced that innkeepers have a "secret" place they get their bed linens!), private bath with shower, small table and chairs, and 2 side chairs near the fireplace. I could just see Cindy curled up in one of those chairs on a winter evening, enjoying a book. There was a wonderful antique dresser, phone and even a fan in the closet! The French doors led out onto the balcony. It was equipped with white wicker furniture and overlooked Broad Street. We spent a few relaxing moments on the balcony as we discussed our travels for the day. With the phone in the room, we were able to check our email before retiring - an amenity that we very much appreciate in a B&B.

Outside our room, in the hall, was a coffee service, set on a timer so that coffee would be ready at our convenience in the morning. There was also tea available. Nearby was a small freezer with bagged ice.

This home, rich in history, belonged to an indigo plantation owner named Benjamin King in 1825. Fifty or so years later, it was sold to a man named Atkinson that put in French molding and medallions around the home and added five bathrooms.

Marilyn and Jerry bought the home about five years ago, remodeled and opened their doors six months later. The shiny hardwood floors show their efforts paid off. The common areas are well appointed with comfortable antique furnishings that lends themselves well to just relaxing or sitting around to visit with other guests.

After a wonderful night's sleep, Cindy rose early, helped herself to the coffee that was freshly brewed and headed down to the screened porch -- along with the book she always seems to have in her hand! I enjoyed the wonderful bed a little longer and then joined her on the porch. It was here that Jerry served breakfast and we were treated to a wine and cheese omelet, blueberry muffins, fresh grapefruit, orange juice and coffee. Breakfast was served on fine china with linen napkins and sterling tableware. The screened-in porch overlooks the lap pool in the back yard, an area that, along with the flowers and trees and fountains, is perfect for that intimate wedding party.

This wonderful old home with its 7-guest rooms will make your wedding or stay in Georgetown, South Carolina full of memories!
