Island Hotel & Restaurant
Cedar Key, Florida
| We arrived just in time to see the finishing touches put on the Christmas decorations. Tony, Dawn and David met us in the lobby as we entered the inn. David took us on a tour and was elegant and precise, charming us with his English accent. The Island Hotel has withstood hurricanes and survived the visits of untold numbers of guests since its construction in 1859. The Inn was originally built as a general store and post office. Dawn and Tony Cousins have quite a detailed history of their wonderful old inn at their Website, so be sure to check it out! | |
We were shown, by our gracious young host, to Room 35 for the night. On the corner overlooking the second floor balcony and the main street of town, we could also see the bay and marina. The Hotel has 13 guest rooms, all individually decorated to encourage romance and traditional ambience. There are no televisions or telephones in the rooms. The floors throughout the hotel are the original hand cut wooden floors from 1859! Great care has been taken to preserve The Island Hotel and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
We took time out from work to enjoy the swing on the balcony and watched the purple pink sun rays disappear into the distant night. The gentle night breeze made the swinging easy. We could have spent hours just relaxing, but Mike needed to get at his photos and I had a lot of people to add to directories.
 | The Hotel boasts a full service restaurant where dinner and breakfast are served and the King Neptune Bar was full the evening we were there (always a sure sign of a good place!). Breakfast the next morning was prepared and served by Dawn. We started with pineapple juice and cranberry juice, tea and coffee served in a French press. This was followed by a fruit dish with grapefruit, grapes, orange slices, and bananas with homemade cinnamon toast, a cheese omelet and bacon. |
And as we left, David waved and said he wanted to tell all his friends back in England, "Hi!"

This is one hotel that would make a great vacation destination for the family or those romantics looking to be so...
Visit their Website and when you make YOUR reservations, be sure to tell them Cruising America said Hi!
