Northern Forage Horseback Adventures
Cooper Landing, Alaska

Today is the day! Our very first horseback ride! We arrived early and met Alex Kime, owner, and Melanie, our guide for the day.

Alex led us on a tour of the property, which includes a teepee and barbecue area, stone sauna and the now under-construction main building. This will house not only the office and tack room, but a gift shop, kitchen and shower facilities and a small cafe with seating on the deck. There are areas for tent camping and the kitchen & shower facilities will be available to the campers.

We met our horses next! I was assigned to Amos and Mike met Carmel. As he had threatened, Mike DID take a photo of me mounting the horse....one you will NOT see here in this review!

Amos was wonderful! He immediately understood that he had a rookie on board and was very gentle with me! After instructions on how to communicate with the horses, we left on our tour. The trail led through the woods, across a bridge over the creek and to the shores of Kenai Lake, then back to our starting point.

At one time, we reached an open, flat area and Melanie asked us all if we wanted to trot. There were a total of 6 in our party......and I was outnumbered! Amos and I trotted just a little bit before I decided that walking was great fun......but trotting was NOT! So, we settled down to a slower pace and then caught up to the others.

Our trip was nice and easy and lasted about 1-1/2 hours - just right for beginners like us. We had a great time and hope to do it again someday. A warning though......that night I discovered muscles in my legs that I never knew were there!

It was great fun, the folks were very helpful and professional and we would recommend Northern Forage Horseback Adventures for a fun side trip or an overnight pack trip. Be sure to visit their website, set up your trail ride (short or long, easy or difficult, they do them all!) and be sure to tell them Cruising America sent you!

This review was set up for us by Kim at the Soldotna Visitor Information Center, so be sure to stop by and tell her we said Hi!
