Casa de la Paz Bed & Breakfast Inn
St. Augustine, Florida

Romance is the "keyword" at this Inn. Three honeymoon couples were guests while we were here and all talked about how the Innkeepers had spoiled them. The Inn has been host to many weddings in their courtyard and an untold number of honeymoons! It's easy to see why the Inn was voted #2 in the State of Florida and received the "1999 Best Of" award for Bed & Breakfast Inns.

This beautiful old home, built in 1915, is rich in history and lore. Gorgeous original woodwork is everywhere you turn, from the wonderful wood floors and window casings to the ceiling mouldings and bookcases. A ghost is also told to appear at times. It seems that many years ago, a newlywed couple were on their honeymoon and visiting the original owners of the home. On their last day in St. Augustine, the groom decided to go for a boat ride and a terrible storm came up. He would never return and many people claim that the bride's soul remains in limbo, waiting for her husband. She is often seen at the top of the stairs, with her bag packed, ready to depart.

Our room at Casa de la Paz was the "Queen Isabella" and had a great view overlooking the bay. With a queen bed, sofa, rocker, TV and telephone, it was a great place to relax after walking all over St. Augustine! The bath was spacious, with a tub-shower combination and all the extra amenities that provide to make their guests feel special!

I just love the old enclosed courtyards in this area and Casa de la Paz has a delightful one. With tables and chairs arranged among the plants, it is a most inviting place to relax and enjoy the fantastic weather of St. Augustine. The looming trees and foliage block the hot afternoon sun, yet let in the cool breezes off the water. Facing on Charlotte St., I could sit there and watch the carriage rides go by and the many tourists exploring the Old Town.

We had spent the day walking around the fort and old graveyards. St. Augustine is a great place to use the black & white and sepia settings on my camera! We stopped in to see some of our clients and we ambled along the cobblestone back streets that reminded Mike a little of the streets in New Orleans. I loved going into all the little shops, watching an artist try to match the colors of the closest stucco, and a mime in the St. George Street market that acted mechanical.

We finally returned to our room (when my feet were about to give out!) and caught up on the news on TV while working. We went down to the parlor around 5pm, met some of the other guests and enjoyed a glass of wine with our hosts. Afterward, I went back to answering the email from the day while Mike strolled along the waterfront catching some more great shots of the sun setting on the water and the bridge.

As soft music played in the background, breakfast was a treat of raspberry-stuffed French toast with raspberry sauce. Topped off with coffee, tea, orange juice and accented with strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, bananas and grapes, it was a great way to start off our day!

As we prepared to leave and explore St. Augustine for another day, we met one of the departing honeymoon couples......from Orangeburg, South Carolina!

A thoroughly delightful place! Be sure visit their Website and contact Casa de la Paz for your special time in St. Augustine....whether it's for your wedding, honeymoon, anniversary retreat or just a great place to stay! And when you do, please tell them Cruising America says HI!
