The Brickhouse Run
Petersburg, Virginia

Our first flavor of Colonial life came with our visit to The Brickhouse Run. Located alongside a beautiful cobblestone street (still in use) is the 1816 diner.
Conner at Walker House Bed & Breakfast had arranged our review and when we parked in the large lot, that was filling up fast at 6:00 pm, we knew we were in for a treat.

Ella Dickinson greeted us with a winning smile and extended handshake as we entered. After the introductions, we were seated in the English Pub side of the restaurant. It was like the pubs I've seen in the movies. It had a beautiful mahogany bar complete with brass footrails.

Our table sat right by the window, affording a view of the cobblestone street. There was a fresh group of flowers in the window and our table had a lit candle on it. As Ella continued to greet each guest as they entered, in no time, both the pub and the dining room were packed.

Mike ordered fish and chips with a garden salad with raspberry vinegarette. He really smiled when Carol, our waitress, sat down a large bottle of malt vinegar.....just what he was about to ask for. I had the Beef and Beer Stew, served over garlic mashed potatoes and dusted with parmesan cheese.....mmmmmm! We were also served fresh bread and butter. I finished with chocolate chip bread pudding.......Mike stole several bites when I wasn't looking!

The menu offers several Starters, including salads, fried green tomatoes, crab cakes and soup. Main courses include Classic Shepherd's Pie, Filet Mignon Bordelaise, Brown Sugar Cured Atlantic Salmon, Tomato Basil Fettuccini con la Rucola, Grilled 48-Hour Guinness Brined Pork Loin and Stuffed Breast of Chicken. Full bar service was available.

Ella checked back often as did Carol and made sure we were happy throughout the meal. Ella said she and her husband, Steve, have run the business since October of 2000. They are looking forward to serving all who come to their Brickhouse Run at 409 Cockade Alley, located in Old Towne Petersburg, next to the Visitor's Center. Their phone number is (804) 862-1815.

If you go on the weekend.....you'd better go early.....by 7 pm, it WILL be full! And, be sure to tell the folks that Cruising America made the recommendation!
