The Brewster Inn
Dexter, Maine

This Historic Register home was built for then Governor (later Senator) Ralph Owen Brewster in the late '30's by Portland architect John Calvin Stevens, when the depression was ravaging the country. The home has 3 staircases, all leading to different areas of the house.

Upon entering, the first thing you notice is the grand staircase and the antique intercom system that was way ahead of its time and unfortunately was still in the process of being put back into working order.

The tour showed us the rich history, as we gazed at historical figures in the original photos that adorn the hallways. These were donated by the Brewster family to be part of the estate. Old radios from bygone eras are throughout the home. The Inn is handicapped accessible with separate entry way and room.

We were taken to "The Blue Room", one that boasts of having given Harry Truman shelter. TV, AC, chairs, a double bed and a private bath finished off the room. Ivy explained that the Dexter area was great for skiing and hunting and that hunters especially like this room because the early sun would wake them.

On the back porch sits a replica of the home. It was done by Brewster's high school students and presented to him. It really helped me understand the layout better. The home is very large and I had to marvel how Ivy and Michael were able to handle all this. On with the tour we found a grass tennis court, gardens, nearby park with covered picnic area and a pond that was on the property when Brewster was there. The grounds contain a wonderful arbor that is a great place for a wedding and are large enough to host a wedding reception as well.

One of the things that struck me was how Ivy catered to her guests. She had even taken "The Dreaded Smoker" into account and had a basket of sweaters by the front door for their use on chilly mornings, there was an ashtray on the porch and insect repellant to help fend off the pesky mosquitos. Little things like this really stood out around the home. It was very hot when we were at The Brewster Inn and the Brooks were kind enough to allow us to plug in The Eagle so that Lexxus could have her air conditioning!

Breakfast was an expanded Continental with fresh fruits, juices, coffee, tea, muffins, bagels and a great quiche!

So if you are in Dexter, swing in and have Michael give you a lesson on his blues guitar or keyboard and visit with Ivy, a very friendly hostess that will cater for your Perfect Stay in central Maine.
